Fischer
Bobby Fischer was born on March 9, 1943. A chess prodigy, he is the only American to ever hold the FIDE world title. Unlike prodigies such as Morphy, Capablanca, and Tal, Fischer has an encyclopedic knowledge of opening lines while also posessing his great predecessors' middle and endgame technique. His style of play is always offensive; Fischer was one of the first modern masters determined to always win as black when most of his contemporaries would aim to achieve a draw.
Bobby Fischer brought a fire to chess both on and off the board that had never been seen before. His antics surrounding the 1972 world chess championship are legendary. Not only did he defeat defending champion Boris Spassky, but his demands for absolute silence, perfect lighting conditions, precise piece and board sizes, and complete control of the organizers and media caught the eye of the 20th century American audience. Chess became more popular in that country than ever before.
Fischer faded from competition after winning the world title in 1972, and failed to defend his title in 1975. He returned to the chess world in 1992 for a rematch against Boris Spassky. The game was held in Yugoslavia, despite a UN embargo in force at the time. Fischer was indicted for playing the match, and is a wanted man in the U S of A. He was detained in Japan during the summer of 2004 while traveling from Japan with an expired U.S. passport. He has since attempted to renounce his U.S. citizenship and is seeking asylum in Japan.
